A photograph from the kibbutz
In April 1940, a group of Hanoar Hatzioni members had their photograph taken on the kibbutz fields. In the background, two buildings can be seen – these are tenement houses (number 71 and 73) which remain in Grochowska to this day. The spot where the picture was taken was the first place we were able to pin down on the map of the former kibbutz.
We bring guests who want to know where exactly the kibbutz was and we photograph ourselves with them on the same spot, against the same backdrop. We place our story of the kibbutz in the concrete context of a modern city, inspiring both the photographers and the photographed to reflect on the history of the place and the people who lived here. We try to understand the context of that photograph, as well as how this space and the perception of it have changed.
